Eyes on Jesus in the Storm
Bunkhouse Beacon - Eyes on Jesus in the Storm
Job 13:13-16 NKJV - “Hold your peace with me, and let me speak, Then let come on me what may! 14 Why do I take my flesh in my teeth, And put my life in my hands? 15 Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him. Even so, I will defend my own ways before Him. 16 He also shall be my salvation, For a hypocrite could not come before Him.
Job, in the midst of devastating loss and suffering, declares that even if God were to take his life, he would still place his trust in him.
In Matthew 14, Peter walked on water. That sentence deserves more attention than it usually receives. An ordinary man stepped out of a boat in the middle of a storm and walked on the surface of the sea.
He did it not because the storm had stopped, but because his eyes were on Jesus.
The moment his attention shifted from the Savior to the storm, he began to sink. This is the central lesson of every wilderness season and every storm. The storm itself is not the problem.
Where your eyes are fixed is the problem. Job understood this. Though everything had been stripped from him, he declared that he would trust God anyway. That is not denial. That is the deepest form of faith, choosing to believe in the character of God when circumstances offer no visible reason to do so.
Reflection: Where is your focus right now, on the size of the storm or on the one who walks through it with you?
Practical Application: Memorize or write out a single verse this week that anchors your faith to the character of God rather than to your circumstances. Return to it every time fear or discouragement rises.
Waiting for Him with you,
Lars
