The Fifth Commandment - A lifelong Posture
Exodus 20:5 NKJV – Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
Nestled between commands about worshiping God and prohibitions against murder stands the fifth commandment: Honor your father and mother.
This isn't merely childhood obedience; it's a lifelong posture of respect, gratitude, and care.
God placed this command among the weightiest moral laws because honoring parents reflects our understanding of authority, gratitude, and covenant faithfulness.
The promise attached, "that your days may be long", reveals God's blessing on those who practice honor.
This doesn't mean pretending every parent is perfect or ignoring real pain. Rather, it means choosing grace over bitterness, forgiveness over resentment, and dignity over disrespect.
Honoring is a decision, not a feeling. Today, ask God to show you one practical way to demonstrate honor.
Grace and Peace
